Top-notch customer service
Pro's: * Free long-distance to several countries
* Great call quality
* Customer service is top-notch
Con's: None.
Reviewed by: Jaime
I have used Speakeasy DSL for about 4-5 years at two different residences and signed on with their VoIP in mid-2005.
So far I have no complaints; the service has great quality, a lot of useful features, unlimited long distance to a large number of countries (I have called China for free), and is reliable. At $24.95/mo I have no complaints about the price either.
Typically I have only called Customer Service with DSL questions but on the couple occasions I've called about my VoIP the service was as great as I've always received. Their Customer Service strives to ensure that we deal with one person from start to finish, and their support ticket system integrates phone and web support to where either method of contact will append the ticket and be viewable online. They are thorough and address any questions or concerns I have much quicker than any other company I deal with. I have worked Customer Service for a large bank and now work with Customer Service at a local insurance company and I am very familiar with outstanding customer service (as well as a lack of it!), and Speakeasy is up there with the best in this regard.

VOIP rates
Reviewed by: Edna
I had speakeasy DSL with VOIP up until two years ago at which point I moved overseas. I was so happy with their service that I paid 19.95 to keep my email addresses, as I planned to use them again when I came back to the states. Well, in the meantime they have been bought by Best Buy and things have changed drastically.
First, the install was a nightmare. Their technician came in to hook up the dsl and phone line and he said he couldn't because the Verizon tech who was supposed to wire for the line had screwed up. (I was using comcast for cable, dsl, and phone at the time). In the process he disconnected my phone service through Comcast. As soon as he left and I realized what had happened I called Speakeasy tech support and I was told by Matt that I was wrong that no way had their technician done that. It took a week before the same technician came back and he told me immediately that if Speakeasy rep Matt, had contacted him he would have known what had happened and would have come back to reconnect me. This rep Matt was so arrogant that he told me, when I asked to speak with a supervisor, that he didn't have one. He said he didn't have a boss. Long story short, I was without a phone for more almost two weeks.
I wish I could say that that is the end of my saga. The reason I liked speakeasy was because of the low international rates as my husband works overseas. When I called to set the service back up I was quoted that calling Brazil costs 4 cents a minute. And the website says the same. Well, I got my bill, which by the way was for 2 1/2 months, not monthly as I was told, and I was charged 8 cents a minute. I spoke with a very nice rep who informed me that the rates were from 2006 and he had a feeling they were wrong. I asked him to check. He just called me and said that they have given me a credit toward my bill, but they also very vaguely mentioned to him that they were updating the website rates. So, I still have no definite answer as to what the rates will be. The rep said he has a feeling the rates have gone up, but he's not sure. Also, given the poor service and quality, I am no longer willing to pay the high monthly rate for DSL and phone.
Finally the first time I had speakeasy the calls were great. Quality was excellent. Now it is mediocre at best. Plus when I dial a number, I usually have to redial 3 or 4 times before it goes through.
If they are raising their rates, given the poor overall service and quality I will eat the early disconnect fee. I do not like doing business with this company anymore.

Excellent Choice for Business
Pro's: Great sound quality, excellent Webinars, customer support, and video training.
Con's: There are so many options that it takes time to learn the system.

We recently switched from Verizon to SpeakEasy for our small law firm. What a wonderful product this is! For small businesses, it is a tremendous value. The call quality is comparable to a land line phone, and there are many more configurations available. The customer support is superb.

BIG Cancellation Penalty
Reviewed by: Anonymous
Excellent service, high quality, great technical support, but very pricey compared to the competition.
As a previous reviewer stated, there is a hefty cancellation fee if you cancel or move before your service term is up. And they aren't exacly up front with this when you sign up, but it is buried in the fine print, so their legal end is covered.
Their billing system is also very confusing (all web based, unless they've changed it in the last year). I switched from their standard DSL with a shared phone line (Verizon), to an exclusive Speakeasy DSL and IP phone system. They charged me the cancellation fee ($300) and then prorated the months with the previous service, then credited back the fee (over the course of several weeks). No one bothered to tell me what to expect, so when I looked at my bill I freaked. It all worked out, but I had no idea it was going to be that complex.
Otherwise, they are very prompt and their technical service is informative to a fault (lots of email updates).

Misled by Sales and poor overseas connections
Reviewed by: Anonymous
I spoke with the Speakeasy service representative and found out that I was misled by the sales team. I ordered my service in February, account # xxxxx and specifically went with Speakeasy for several reasons over the local and cheaper provider, Verizon. The main reason for going with them and paying twice what Verizon charged, was the option to cancel with no penalty clause. In my initial discussions I was told, "I could pay extra for the equipment, installation, and monthly service charges in lieu of a long term commitment". This was appealing to me as I work as a government contractor, and am generally not in any one location for a long period of time, and a move now is what is precipitating the need to cancel my service. I called today and was informed, I would be required to pay 345 dollars to cancel my service. In addition, I was told I could not effective date my cancellation a week from today, I would need to call the day of the cancellation. This information flies in the face of what I was told by the sales department, and the cancellation fee is a what I would consider high, as the competition does not charge that much.
The service was decent with the exception of calls overseas. On a fairly regular basis you would connect to the other caller, and hear the other person, but the voice wouldn't go through. After multiple hang-ups and redials it would finally connect. Not a really impressive thing when trying to do business.
